2018 Engineers Ireland Excellence Awards

AGL Consulting are delighted to announce that our Managing Director, Conor O’Donnell, has been shortlisted for the Best Presentation Award at the 2018 Engineers Ireland Excellence Awards.

His presentation on “Earthworks Classification and Ground Improvement Techniques” was given at the Roads and Transportation Society seminar on Road Design at Engineers Ireland in February 2018.

The presentation reviews the classification, material characteristics and application of a range of earthworks fill materials defined in the TII Specification for Roadworks.  General guidelines are provided for assessing material acceptability by direct and indirect correlation to laboratory and in-situ test results.  Case studies of recent experiences with Irish Glacial soils highlight difficulties with characterising fill materials from ground investigations.  Specific reference is made to assessing and mitigating the geotechnical risks associated with Made Ground.  Methods of ground improvement ranging from air drying to soil stabilisation are discussed and a case study is presented to illustrate how lime-cement stabilisation was used to process marginal site-won cohesive glacial soils into capping and structural fill for the development of a large food distribution centre for Pallas Foods in North County Dublin.
